Time Atlas is a playful and poetic exploration of time and visual history. It weaves together images from a variety of sources, from intimate personal archives to Internet imagery, old encyclopedias, newspapers, guidebooks and manuals. Following an idiosyncratic visual and intuitive logic, Niina Vatanen combines all the different materials creating new and surprising connections. Inspired by encyclopaedias, Vatanen organizes pictures loosely with thematic categories. She is focusing especially on questions concerning time and our perception of it, and exploring how visual memory, personal experience, and history intertwine.
Time Atlas is also an absurd attempt to control the ever-growing flood of images and bring it together in a meaningful way. In the work perception meets intuition, material encounters immaterial, fiction confronts fact, and life faces death.
Time Atlas was first published as a book in November 2019. The book contains almost 300 pages. Its rich artwork consists of a total of 274 black and white and color prints.
